Before 1993 activities of the Institute was funded from Normal ( Plan) budget only.. Since 1993 funds from various International agencies started flowing to the Institute. Institute has implemented following externally aided projects through I.C.F.R.E.

World Bank's Forestry Research, Education and Extension Project (REEP)
United Nations Development Program (UNDP) for taining and Extension
International Development Research Centre (IDRC) project on Himalayan Eco-Rehabilitation
United States Agency for International Development (USAID) project on Himalayan Poplar

Besides this , the Institute also received a direct funding of Rs. 20.98 lakhs during 1999-2000 , from the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Resources , Biomass Division, Government of India, New Delhi for the project entitled " Survey and evaluation of selected species for energy plantation in north east India. The Institute is also involved in implementation of the project " Resource enhancement and processing of Cane and Bamboo species suitable for Handicrafts " This project is sponsored by Ministry of Textiles , Government of India under "Fibre and Handicrafts Development Programme " of the UNDP. The estimated cost of this project is Rs. 37.44 lakhs.
