The Institute has also embarked on a gigantic task to improve the planting stock of selected tree species of the region which will act as catalyst in poverty eleviation. In order to convert green biomass into green gold Institute has taken up following Technology Missions:
Wood substitute - Bamboos & Canes
Hard wood - Dipterocarpus retusus (Hollong)
Soft wood - Gmelina arborea (Gamhar)
King of timber - Tectona grandis (Teak)
Hollong Tree

Through these technology missions, scientists are determined to give not only the improved planting stock but also complete package of practices to the users/clients. In the next decade, the Institute visions a changed face of the northeast through green-biomass-based industrial revolution by these technology missions. Recognizing the fact that resources become utilizable only with the development of proper technology for their economic exploitation. Also mere presence of forest resources in the northeast does not necessarily mean that the region is economically developed. The states of northeast India are lagging behind not because they lack in sources but because they lack in technology to harness these resources. Forests are the chief resources in this region. With judicious use and appropriate conservation measures, these resources can be used continuously for a very long period of time.

Therefore, the Institute has embarked on a gigantic task to improve planting stock improvement programme of selected species of the region which will act as catalyst to convert green biomass into green gold. The technology mission on planting stock improvement programme of Dipterocarpus retusus, Gmelina arborea and Tectona grandis is aimed to boost the activities of woodbased industry which are virtually closed and in some cases moving out ofthe region thereby jeopardizing the economic growth of the region.
