The National Forest Library and Information Centre (NFLIC) is the heart of all academic activities of the Forest Research Institute. It is housed in a double storied functional building having a plinth area of 7266 square meters. The building has all modern facilities including centrally air-conditioned conference room, reference room and a reading hall.

The NFLIC has been Providing following facilities and services to its Users :

  1. Document Collection: The NFLIC maintains an excellent and up to date document collection of about 0.16 million primarily on forestry, agriculture, and biological sciences. Books are also available on other subjects. The NFLIC subscribes to nearly 400 journals in forestry and allied sciences, and the following bibliographical databases on CD - ROM: Biological Abstracts, CAB CD, Tree CD, AGRIS, Biotechnology Abstracts, Ecology Abstracts, Entomology Abstracts, and Pollution Abstracts. 

  2. Grey Literature: In the field of forestry a good amount of literature remain unpublished and inaccessible. The NFLIC has collected a good amount of grey literature on forestry, processed it, and compiled a database. 

  3. Reference Service: An expert help is available in locating a piece of information, consultation of reference sources, OPAC, bibliographical databases on CD -ROM format, locating a document, etc. 

  4. Documentation Services: The NFLIC has a full-fledged documentation unit having about 12,300 ledger files containing valuable information on forestry and allied sciences.

  5. Electronic Contents Page Service: Realizing the importance of resource sharing, the NFLIC has introduced this service recently, whereby the content pages of the journals are scanned and sent to the libraries of the council through e-mail. The required articles are again scanned and sent to the interested users as an attachment to the e-mail.

  6. Reprographic Service: The NFLIC maintains a good reprographic unit having modern photocopiers and an electronic duplicating machine. This service is available on payment basis. The internal users are charged Re. 0.50 per page and outside users Re. 1.00 per page. 

  7. Membership: The NFLIC provides its membership with borrowing facility to the forest scientists and other officials of Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education and its institutes; research scholars and students of Forest Research Institute (Deemed University); officers, faculties and probationers of Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy and State Forest Service College; and officers of Forest Survey of India. Special membership is also available to the working and retired officers of union and state governments, and public sector undertakings.

  8. Book Depot: The Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education, and its Forest Research Institute did a pioneering work on forestry and brought out a number of publications in printed as well as electronic forms. These publications can be purchased from the Book Depot of the NFLIC.

  9. ENVIS Centre on Forestry: The NFLIC has been designated as an ENVIS Centre on Forestry by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt. of India. This centre provides information services on forestry to the users. The Centre also brings out two publications viz. ENVIS Forestry Bulletin: a half yearly publication; and News Digest: a monthly service containing press clippings on forestry, environment and wildlife.

  10. Films: The Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education, and its Forest Research Institute have brought out a number of films related to various techniques in forest utilisation. Some of the films are: Bamboo - A Gift of Nature, Utilisation of Eucalyptus (3 parts), Non-Wood Forest Products, Treated Catamarans, Rehabilitation of Degraded Mines, Agroforestry - A Practice of Progress and Prosperity, Neem - The Green Goldmine, and Rain Water Harvesting in Arid Zones. The films are on VHS and can be purchased from the NFLIC.
