Brief Description

To strengthen the extension work of the Forest Research Institute, Extension Division was established in the year 1997 after restructuring of the erstwhile Social Forestry Division. Besides endeavoring for publicity and extension of technologies developed at the Institute, efforts are made to spread general awareness about forestry and environment through combination of extension methodologies.

Thrust Areas:

Researches in agroforestry, Participatory Forest Management (PFM) and extension technologies.

Highlight of Achievements

Agroforestry has proved to be a vital programme for integrated rural development. Different poplar based agroforestry models viz. Block, Boundary and Row plantations were developed in different villages of Haridwar District (Uttaranchal) and Yamunanagar (Haryana). Agroforestry has resulted in creation of employment opportunities, enhancement of income of farmers, environmental protection, and soil conservation as well as fulfillment of the local needs of timber and fuelwood.

Studies were undertaken on farmers' fields in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to study the yield of agricultural crops under tree species. Various special designs of agricultural crops and Poplars, Acacia nilotica and Eucalyptus combinations have been suggested.

A germplasm bank of 358 clones of Poplar has been maintained to preserve and demonstrate the various successful clones in India. Various exotic species/ Clones/hybrids/ of Poplar from U.K., West Germany, Australia, Turkey, Italy, Portugal and New Zealand have been introduced. Outstanding success was seen between the latitudes of 270 N and 300 N.

Participatory Forest Management has success stories as well as failure. Studies on its impact on the status of forests and on socio-economic development of the rural masses is underway, results of which will enable to adopt suitable strategy for making future programmes of participatory management.

Future Plans

  1. Helping farmers in establishment of their own nurseries to fulfil requirements of the villages.

  2. To conduct necessary surveys in the states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttaranchal, and Uttar Pradesh to ascertain status of agroforestry and its potential so as to prepare area specific plans and strategies for optimum development of agroforestry.

  3. Survey, identification and monitoring of agroforestry practices, and Silvicultural and management interventions in agroforestry.

  4. Study long term and short-term economic benefits of main components of agroforestry systems, estimation of yield and prescription of methodologies for economic analysis.

  5. Selection of site-specific and need based tree species.

  6. Developing a database on agroforestry and participatory forest management.

  7. Publication and preparation of audio-visual material for Scientists, managers, other professionals, land users and public at large.

Services Available.

  1. Farmers' Training on Agroforestry
Regular training programmes are conducted to educate farmers regarding selection of suitable agroforestry species, nursery and plantation technology including maintenance of the plantations, economics and marketing of agroforestry products. The training is conducted at the institute as well as in the field to cover maximum number of farmers.

  2. Providing technical know-how for planting trees.
This service is provided to farmers and others who take up plantation practices like agroforestry, farm forestry, etc.

  3. Advanced Training of Forest Officers on agroforestry
For large coverage and effective implementation of agroforestry extension, forest officers of different state governments are trained in latest and advanced technologies in the field of agroforestry.

  4. Providing quality seedlings.
Quality seedlings of various fruit bearing, medicinal, ornamental, timber and other miscellaneous forestry species are sold to general public at reasonable rates.

  5. Short Term Training Courses.
Short term training courses are organised by the Institute in about fifteen forestry disciplines. The Division coordinates these training programmes.

Research Activities of undergoing research in various disciplines

[March ending 2006]

Project-1. Effect of Populus deltoides on shade loving medicinal plants.

Principal investigator: Shri Deepak Khanna

During the said period growth measurement of Populus deltoides has been done at poplar demo company and germplasm bank of P. deltoides is being done at FRI, Dehradun. Plots selected in Gurukul Narson have been dressed for shade loving medicinal plants. Plantation of Chitrak (Plumbago zeylanica) and Shataver (Asparagus racemosus) has been done in selected plots in two farmer’s field at village Kuahedi in District Haridwar. Regular monitoring is been done and maintenance with farmer’s interaction is in progress.

Project-2. Tree crop interactions: Effect of Melia species on  crop.

Principal investigator: Shri Deepak Khanna

A survey to study the current practices on Melia species in different climatic zones of Punjab has been made and the districts Hoshiarpur, Patiala, Roopnagar, Nawashahar and Jalandhar have been completed. As per close observation different types of agroforestry practices like block plantations, row plantations and boundary plantation were found. Data on growth parameter in these plantation systems were collected and are under analysis. A nursery of Melia species is being maintained in Central Nursery, FRI, Dehradun. These grown plants will be utilized to plant in Punjab to make different agroforestry models.

Project-3. Effect of Pine and Oak forests on agriculture crops.

Principal investigator: Shri Deepak Khanna

A survey for site selection to conduct the study have been made in Uttaranchal where different sites in Pauri, Uttarkashi and Chamoli districts have been visited for the study.

Any other information that can be posted on the web:

Programming of 16 Short Term Training courses and 9 Low cost Training courses has been done and a Short Term Training course calendar 2006 showing the course schedule and contents is published. This Short Term Training course calendar has been sent to different target groups. Training on different forestry aspects is being imparted. Research activities and achievements of different divisions of FRI are compiled for publication in the form of annual report 2005 – 2006. Preparation of extension material in the form of books and posters has been done by this division.
